Zombie movies are just stupid, mindless, killing/surviving movies. And the're just plain fun to watch with all that gore.

Now there have been Zombie games in the past. Resident Evil, Zombie Rampage.....Resident Evil...yeah so Resident Evil dominates the Zombie genre for the most part. But most the zombie games out there focus more on being scary. Enter "Dead Rising". This game is all about the typical Zombie Infestiation senario. Theres a huge mall and the people who arn't yet are all hiding and you're one of them right? WRONG! this game throws a few really good plot twists to the typical O-M-G-ZOMBIES-ARE-COMING!!! type story. For starters your charcter is a freelance photographer/journalist he comes to the Mall on purpose in an attempt to get the greatest story and win some awards. You have to make some choices on what to do in the game, like do you save the injured man or do you let the poor man die and take a kick-ass pic of it and make your point sky-rocket.

Now if you remember, the game was boasting about how almost everything you can get your hands on is a weapon. It's totally true, there are SOOOOO many weapons to kill the Zed's with. And it's not like some of the weapons are clones of the other weapons, like 80% are totally origional weapons like the shovel and the sledgehammer have both a normal large radius swing, but if you use the 2nd attack for the shovel it stabs the ground and the other attack for the hammer is a head-crusher swing (which creates a grand amount of blood *woohoo*). For the first 45 min-hour of the game you will be choosing silly weapons to kill with (like CD's and Giant Stuffed Bears) because of how much fun it is. But after that the game gets gritty, this game is a very hard game mainly because of how many Zombies there are. It looks like you can have up to 800 (0_0) Zombies on screen and the have all of them gang-beat you to a bloody pulp. There is also a massive cast of Insane Bosses, like a Chainsaw juggling phycho clown, or the Crazy Market Owner who has a bunch of knifes and other sharp objects on a cart and he rams you with it. Its a weird kind of scary.

Actually lets go farther into the weird scary. This game trys to mess with your head, from the insane charcters who are metally ill, too the reason that the Zombies are there to begin with. The great thing about Dead Rising is it gives you a very livly storyline, you will always be keep in the dark about whats going on until it hits you like the whore it is. This gives the game depth instead of a run-around-kill-everything gameplay style. Another thing that adds depth is that your weapons will break through repeated use. Some will break fast (like the skateboard) others will serve you well for a long time (like the Hand Barbell, which i recommend getting) so not only do you have the choice of choosing from a bunch of weapons, it starts to get manditory that you pick up what weapons you have at your disposal. I hade to face a guy with a Sniper Rifle, i on the other hand had no long-range weapons. So i ran to the Hockey Store that was right next to me and picked up a Hocky Stick and a buncha Pucks and i kicked the crap outta the guy.

All and all, if you have an Xbox 360, It should be a crime not to have this game. It is the greatest game i have played on the 360 yet.

The Ultimate Plumber!

Everyone knows him, obviously, Mario! Lately I've been really into some of the games in the Mario series. Not the sports ones though, I'm not fond of them...

Anyway, I'll tell you about some of my favorite games in the Mario series. First:

Super Mario Brothers 3: For the original NES, this is the game that first got me into the series. Sidescrolling through tons of huge levels to reach the final stage, where you beat Bowser and save Peach. Standard, and I'm sure everyone already knows all about it already, so I'll finish with this one by saying it's the one that got me into the series.

Super Mario 64: Woah! This is what's called a revolutionary game! It's meaning is literal here! No more sidescrolling little stages, no more little world map where you walk around on dots. Now it's huge 3D stages with 6 missions in each, and instead of a world map, you explore Peach's Castle and jump into magic paintings that Bowser trapped the Power Stars, that you need to recover, in. It's sooo fun in 3D too, and there are tons of different things added. Instead of having mushrooms make you big so you can take one hit to turn tiny before you die, you have a health meter, with eight blocks on it. Different things can take down different amounts of your health. Mushrooms are used for extra lives. The greatest addition though, is that you can get new hats that power up Mario so he can do different things. One turns him invisible, one turns him metal, and one lets him fly!

And there are, like most of the games in the series, tons of secrets. There are 120 stars to collect, and to get them you have to find every little secret in the castle, and complete every mission in each world. Luckily, to beat the game, you only need 70, but there's a big secret to unlock once you get all 120.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars: This is the game that got me into all the other RPG games I play today. It's a classic turn-based battle system for the Super Nintendo involving Mario, Peach and Bowser. But this time it's not Bowser kidnapping Peach, a new force has arrived, and Mario and Bowser are forced to team up, along with some other allies, to regain Mushroom Kingdom. The battles aren't boring either. Instead of a simple: you attack, enemy attack, you attack, enemy attack, now you get to block enemy attacks by timing your defense, and increase the power of your attack by doing things like timing a button press or spinning the directional pad. There are also lots of other Mario RPGs to try: Paper Mario, Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, and Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. They all involve the button presses in battle so you don't get bored, and each is a bit different in the way they execute it. They're all really cool.

Super Mario 64 DS: Yahoo! A remake of my absolute favorite Mario game! And they made it even better than the original! To implement the 3D with no joystick, they used the touch screen to imitate one. It takes a bit of getting used to, but the added bonuses into the game, like how there's more characters than just Mario (Yoshi, Luigi and Wario), and the number of available stars is bumped up to 150, making it VERY worth it.

New Super Mario Brothers: Basically it brings back the old Mario style, sidescrolling, jumping craziness. Nothing really new about it besides some new items which weren't in the old ones, but they also took out most of the items from the old ones, so... bleh. It's a disappointment to the Nintendo DS's capabilities, but still pretty neat how it brings up the old Mario style that we thought was long lost.

Okay... my endless rant is finally over. And... hooray for the ultimate plumber!... I wish he'd actually use a wrench in one of his games... as a weapon... XD

Terrible Tuesday: E3 Cancelled

Lend me your ears fellow gamers, for I bring urgent and sad news from the kingdom of gaming. As many of you know there is a great gathering of gamers once every year. Where every Nerd, Geek, Hacker, and Gamer could join in the holy rhapsody of new games and systems. This was dubbed E3, the holy grail of gaming get togethers. Every Gamer has had the dream to go to an E3 when they came of age. Sadly this dream could be shattered. Shattered like all the windows on Jack Thompson's house.

E3 '07 has been cancelled. And if that wasn't bad enough, E3 '06 COULD BE THE LAST E3...EVER!!!

Don't believe me? here is a website giving a bit more detail into the horror that has grasped us.

Joystiq: E3 Cancelled

I would dive deeper into the madness that has gripped us by the balls and may never let go, but I am much too depressed now to have any further comments.

Posted by Jay

Puzzling Pirates:

I played a game called "Puzzle Pirates" today. It's a MMOG(massively multiplayer online game) and as the title points its a puzzle game. Just like tetris. This, in my opinion, is one of the worst MMOG's out there. It sucked, I don't know if it's just because I suck at puzzle games, but I hated it. In this game, you can befriend people, and buy swords, houses, etc. But the way you fight with swords is odd, you fight using tetris gameplay to attack... I absolutely hated it, I do not like puzzle games, and I never well. I can't say much more about the game, because after about 1 hour of gameplay, I quit and uninstalled it from my computer. I recommend you download this game, only if you enjoy puzzle games.

Posted by Luke

Tales of...Tales:

The Tales series... In my opinion, the absolute best series of RPGs ever, with the usual few exceptions of course. Some are just awful, and some are just... godlike.

You're probably wondering now, "What the hell is the Tales series?" Well, it's a series of RPG games that all have similar styles of gameplay, but each of them are different in some ways to keep it interesting. You'll be able to tell if you've found a Tales title, because they all start with the same phrase "Tales of" and end with some sort of mystical-sounding suffix like "Destiny", "Eternia", "Rebirth", etc.

The reason these games shine above so many others, is the gameplay. The battle system in particular. Each one is a bit different, but most involve a 2D battlefield in which your characters fight in a Super Smash Brothers type battle, except with more RPG elements like HP and TP.

The storyline of them all is no simple matter either. Most go very in-depth into each character's background and events that unfold during the game. The characters all have some different, fitting, cool personalities that fit the story well, and should keep you hooked to find out what happens in the end. Even if it doesn't, the battle system is addictive enough to keep you playing until the end.

Before I start my endless rant about the series, I think I'll leave off with a suggestion. For anyone who knows how to work a Playstation emulator, but hasn't played Tales of Destiny II... play it. Now. And for anyone who owns a GameCube, but hasn't played Tales of Symphonia... play it. Now.

Posted by Schimmel

Guilty Gears Dust Strikers: A Review

Now that I actually have a bit more time on my hands I can give a review for Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers.

Let's get one thing straight, Guilty Gear X2 is the best game in the series, the game after that is Guilty Gear: Isuka. That is the absolute worst game in the series. I will be comparing the 2 games to this one.

To start off, this is what GG: Isuka should of been like. In Isuka there were 4 players (you needed a Multitap because this is a PS2 game) but all 4 of those players were on ground level. So that created some lameness in the game because everyone was right frickin' next to each other. To further that problem YOU HAD TO USE THE R1 BUTTON TO TURN AROUND. This caused your character to be raped by 1 to 3 other people while your franticly hitting R1 and hoping your enemy gives your character time to turn around. GG:Dust Strikers solves this in a big way, hitting the D-pad in the opposite direction will turn your character around (OMG I never heard of that happening before =p). But the reason that you used R1 to turn in Isuka was because they included all the button commands for GG:X2 which was a 1-vs-1 2D fighter where the fighters automatically faced each other. But because the series was turning into a 4-way-free-for-all they had two choices: either you keep the same controls and add a button to turn (which they did in Isuka) or they could simplify the button commands and make the characters turn naturally. That's what they did for Dust Strikers. Gone are all the GG:X2 commands like "down-downback-back then Half circle forward" and "half circle back then forward". And all the special moves are handled by the A button, like "forward+A" and "down+A" and "down-downforward-forward+A". This makes all the special attacks much simpler. The other 3 buttons are as follows; Y= light attack, B= heavy attack, X= Dust. Any Guilty Gear player will know that Dust is a single, slow attack that launches the enemy in the air. In Dust Strikes the Dust attack has a larger role, hence the name. Because the battle arenas are split into 4 platforms (2 on each screen) the dust attack now has more options. It acts more like a combo finisher, Dust now whacks your enemy either up or down (depending on what way you press). This makes Dusting more important than it once was. Also, the game keeps the Roman Cancel (you use it at the end of a combo to re-start a combo chain off the already exciting combo) and the Phyche Burst, except now the Burst changes a little. The Burst originally created a burst around your character and if it hit, it knocked your enemy down and filled your Tension Bar (the thing you use for Super Attacks), but you could only use the Burst once per round, sometimes even once per match if you did poorly. Now it still knocks them down, but it costs 50% of your Tension. Even though that sounds lame you can use it many more times than once per round to save your arse.

Now that I pretty much covered all the gameplay, I'll get to the less important things. The music is absolutely great, it still contains that Japanese Heavy Metal (Jap. Metal is more like 80's Metal, its high pitched instead of deep and low pitched like Modern Metal). The story is kinda lame. It just follows the same plot that the characters have always had (Anji's still looking for "That Man", Faust is still trying to heal people, Millia is still trying to kill Zato-1, Eddie, who is possessing Zato-1's dead body, is still looking for a new, better, non-dead body, etc.). Some people change but not much (Zappa now knows that hes is possessed and cant heal it, so he trys finding a wife, Jam, who got a bounty in the last game, is looking for more recipes for her new restraint, ect.). The story never really goes anywhere, it just ends with them fighting Gig, the last Boss. This is a major letdown from GG:X2's story, which contains 3 endings per character and solves/creates more problems with each characters story. Another thing is if you don't know anything about the last couple of games the story will give you the largest "WTF?!?!" feeling you will ever have. The graphics for the game are ok, its not anything to really whine about but there not "eye-bleeding great". The sad thing is, there seem to be no real unlockables (one of the characters is an empty slate that you win moves for by beating mini games, but that's really it). GG:X2 could take YEARS to unlock everything, I'm not joking either.

Overall, even though the story TOTALLY let me down (pick up GG:X2, the story is fantastic), and there seems to be zero unlockables, the game is still a very fun fighter.

7/10

Man, my hands are killing me from all this typing. >_<

Edited by Schimmel!

Posted by Jay

Flashback Friday: Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid is for sure one of my all time favorites. I first played it about five years ago at my friend's house. I loved the gameplay and the story, even though it's short and you can beat the game in about 2-4 hours. At the time it had a unique genre being a stealth action game, setting it apart from other action games. When I first watched my friend play through it, I thought "wow what a cool game," but when I actually got around to play it, I found out this was an AWESOME GAME! The gameplay was a bit different than the games I had played, and the story was sweet. I still play the game from time to time when I'm not playing its other installments. This is another great game I recommend to anyone who likes "tactical espionage action" =P.

Posted by Bryenn

My Gears are Guilty: A DS Story Pt. 2

I just bought a DS. Well actually I didn't JUST buy a DS but a DS Lite, and played it for a couple hours. Figuratively speaking I have a DS Lite on one hand and on the other I can write another blog. I choose DS Lite anyday. Speaking of my new DS, its amazing. The brightness is like looking at the reflection of the sun off of Chuck Norris' beard. Not only is it (warning gamer talk coming up) 1337 but its also bad-ass. To go along with my new DS I also got Guilty Gear Dust Strikers. Notice that Dust Striker is short for DS. Very smooth.

As for GG: DS, its a good game. The GG series has been a 1-on-1 fighter for most of the time. But recently it took a dive and turned into a 4-way-free-for-all. Thankfully this installment is better since the free for all adds a nice touch to gameplay.

Posted by Jay

Mods of Morrowind

So I finally upgraded my computer for the main reason of playing this awesome game I had once played at my brother's house called Morrowind. After the upgrade my brother gave me three CD's. I then install Morrowind along with a editor and expansion included. At the time I didn't know what the editor was for so I just ignored it and booted the game up. A week later I've started a new game about five times since I felt I had made my character wrong or missed something. The game was starting to get boring but then I stumbled upon a awesome site and found out what that editor was for.... making mods!!! And my oh my mods are awesome. Now I can go defeat an evil uber lord. I can also get to fly dragons around Morrowind and have them shoot fire balls. I can even convince a captain to give me his boat and sail it around the vast sea and fire cannon balls. Well anyway I have come to find Morrowind + Mods = One GREAT game. I recommend it to RPG fans for it is one of the very best I have ever played.

Posted by Bryenn

Jet Set Radio Future of the PS3

Yeah I'm Jay, and I'm new on the team (Go Team!)

I'd like to talk more but I'm currently infected with the Jet Set Radio/Jet Set Radio Future music. No, not "I like". No, not "addicted" but pure, the grand awesomeness of this music is coursing through my bloodstream infected. Sadly I have no Xbox, therefore I cant play Jet Set Radio Future. The whole reason I know anything about that game is because when the Xbox was first released my Aunt and Uncle had visited me and brought their Xbox along, which included JSRF. I spent the next week worshiping that game. Although I'm missing the Xbox sequel I own the original Jet Set Radio ( I totally refuse to call it Jet Grind Radio) for the Dreamcast (I love you Dreamcast) and it is also the game I have beat numerous times than any other game, EVER!

At this point I am praying for the Jet Set Radio series to grace the Next Gen. room to enjoy its bright screen goodness. I threw myself atop my bed and examined it. It had the same glossy look as the iPod and that made me drool all over myself. So after an hour of staring at it I turned it on. The screen was as bright as gates of heaven. Then I popped in New Super Mario Bros... 5 hours later I had conquered World 1, World 2, World 4, World 6, and then I was at World 8. I had only 5 lives left and made it past the first two levels now it was time for the dungeon. I had made it to the checkpoint and went to face baby bowser. Less then ten seconds later I died again and again. I finally got frustrated and turned off the DS and tucked it away into its case. Well today was a good day I wonder what tomorrow is like.

Posted by Joseph

Maple Madness

So I kind been playing Maple Story lately. It's a free mmorpg and it's freakin addicting, I even coughed up 18 dollars just to buy some premium clothes for my character in the game. And what a waste of money that was. Well now that I wasted precious time and money I'm a level 14 thief WOOT. Well all I can say is this is sucking my life away its its pretty fun I recommend it to people of all ages.

Maple Story Official Website

Posted by Joseph
